There are a lot of unique things about the 2020 college football season, but at the top, almost nothing has changed.
The sport is still dominated by three teams: Alabama, Clemson and Ohio State. Alabama or Clemson has appeared in the previous six PSC fields, while Ohio State is aiming for its fourth appearance and first consecutive season.
The loss of Clemson on Saturday night at Notre-Dame is a game-changer. Notre Dame, who rallied late to force overtime and outlasted Clemson in the second overtime session, has shown that she belongs, at least for now, to the upper crust. The same is true for Clemson, as the Tigers came close to securing the victory despite the absence of starting quarterback Trevor Lawrence or several key defensemen. Clemson is also emerging from Notre Dame’s loss with a few bright spots, none greater than alternate quarterback DJ Uiagalelei, who passed for 439 yards, the most Notre Dame has ever allowed.
The first CFP ranking comes out in 15 days. Except major upheaval, these four teams will lead the overview.
Here is a list of the top four, with help from coaches who have spotted or faced each team.
AP Rating: 1
Next: LSU (road), Kentucky (home), Auburn (home)
Allstate Playoff Predictor: 90.5% chance of becoming CFP, 39% of winning the national title
Alabama have the strongest profile, including wins over Texas A&M and Georgia, by a total of 45 points. The program’s pivot to attacking is over, reinforced by recent comments from Nick Saban to ESPN’s Chris Low that attacking is now more important than defense in today’s game.
There’s apparently no way to stop the Tide offense. Even Georgia, who have excellent staff at all three levels of defense, surrendered 31 points in the 33:06 final in a 41-24 loss to Alabama, who finished with 564 yards and 33 first downs, averaging 7.4 yards per game. Alabama will certainly miss wide receiver Jaylen Waddle (557 yards, 22.3 yards per receiving, four touchdowns), but coaches don’t expect the unit’s overall production to slow down much.
