A day after the news of “Jeopardy!” the death of Alex Trebek, we are already talking about his replacement.
According to The Wrap, ABC News chief presenter and political correspondent George Stephanopoulos are lobbying for him to take charge of the welcome concert.
The iconic game show host died Sunday at the age of 80 after a battle with pancreatic cancer.
An ABC source denied to The Post that Stephanopoulos is continuing the role of host, saying, “Of course he doesn’t lobby… how disrespectful that would be to Alex’s family.”
According to The Wrap report, the 59-year-old, who also co-anchors “Good Morning America” and hosts Sunday’s “This Week” on ABC, has “actively” pursued the role. ABC, which owns the syndication rights for the game show, will have to decide on a replacement by the game show’s distributor, CBS Television, and producer Sony Television.
In May, Stephanopoulos told Howard Stern he was interested in the role, but whoever took over from Trebek would have “big shoes to fill.”
“I think that would be a lot of fun,” he told Stern. “But I like what I do, too.”
Trebek was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer in March 2019, but continued in hospitality despite “great pain.”
Countless tributes to Trebek have poured in since his passing, including from other game show hosts and community stars like champion Ken Jennings. In September, Jennings, 46, was recruited as a longtime consultant producer for the quiz, leading some fans to speculate that he would be Trebek’s successor.
The last “Jeopardy!” episode with Trebek will air on Christmas Day.
