CBS has heard the calls for more diversity in its hit reality shows … and is committed to making it happen.
The network says its unscripted shows – including the hugely popular “Survivor,” “Big Brother” and “Love Island” – will have at least 50 percent black, native and colored (BIPOC) from 2021- 22 season.
In addition, CBS promises to commit at least 25% of its annual unscripted development budget to projects created or co-created by minorities … and has set a target of 40% BIPOC representation in theaters. writers next year as well.
Chairman and CEO of CBS Entertainment Group George cheeks says … “The reality TV genre is an area that is particularly under-represented, and needs to be more inclusive through development, casting, production and all phases of storytelling.”
Cheeks says the network’s promise of diversity is just the first step in finding new voices for content, and that it goes hand in hand with a production partnership with the NAACP.
As you may know … CBS has been the target of racial controversy over its reality TV shows in recent years, particularly with “Big Brother”. The guests were criticized for making a racist joke about another Asian guest in July 2019, and there had been an n-word controversy the year before.
Likewise, “Survivor” has taken the heat for many years for a lack of diversity among its castings … and alleged favoritism of white players over minority players.
CBS says their goal is to change all of that.
