Dr Anthony Fauci, director of the U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said on Monday he had no plans to step down from his current post.
“It’s important work. I’ve been doing it for a very long time now. I’m doing it under six presidents,” Fauci told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer. “This is important work and my goal is to serve the American public, regardless of administration.”

The announcement comes after President Trump made remarks at a campaign rally in Opa-locka, Fla., Which raised speculation he could fire Fauci after the 2020 election.
“Don’t tell anyone, but let me wait a bit after the election,” Trump replied to thousands of supporters chanting “Fire Fauci,” adding that he appreciated their “advice.”
Fauci noted that the last time he spoke with Trump was while being treated for the coronavirus at Walter Reed Medical Center. He also declined to say whether he had spoken to President-elect Joe Biden.
“I want to focus on what I’m doing now in terms of getting a vaccine and the health of this country in the sense of normality, which I think we can get with this vaccine,” added Fauci. This is really what I want to talk about. “

Fauci called the news of Pfizer and BioNTech’s COVID-19 vaccine to be 90% effective “extraordinary” and “big deal.”
He expects the vaccine to be potentially available to the American people “most likely before the end of this year”, assuming all goes well with regulatory approval.
“What the company will most likely do, in fact I’m sure they will, is put it in soon, in a week and a half or so for emergency use authorization and finally for the ‘final approval of the vaccine, “Fauci says. “If that goes well, we could have doses that we can give people by the end of November, the beginning of December, probably until December.”
According to the latest update from Johns Hopkins University, the United States has passed 10 million confirmed cases of coronavirus and more than 238,000 related deaths.
