The long rematch between Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier is a done deal.
According to multiple sources speaking to MMA Fighting, McGregor and Poirier have both made a deal to book the lightweight fight for the upcoming UFC 257 card on January 23 with the card set to take place in Las Vegas.
While the fight has been going on for several weeks, negotiations are still ongoing to reach an agreement with the athletes. Late Monday night, it seems all parties are in agreement.
However, according to sources, McGregor would still prefer to return sooner and it appears he is pushing for the December 12 date now that Nunes vs Anderson has been dropped for the main event at UFC 256.
After announcing his retirement earlier this year, McGregor began to hint at a return while expressing his frustration that the UFC had not kept him as busy as he wanted after a quick first round TKO against Donald. “Cowboy” Cerrone in January.
This ultimately led McGregor to call for a charity match against Poirier in Ireland, which then implicated the UFC with an idea to book the fight for real.
Both fighters were on board immediately, but negotiations continued until this week with McGregor and Poirier in the process of settling with the UFC.
For Poirier, this will not only serve as an opportunity to potentially win another shot at UFC gold, but it will give him a chance to avenge an earlier loss to McGregor in 2014. That night, as the two fighters were competing at featherweight, McGregor finished Poirier just 1:46 am of the first round.
More than six years later, Poirier is looking to tie the series with McGregor after building himself one of the best lightweight in the sport. Poirier has gone 5-1 in his last six fights, including wins over Justin Gaethje, Eddie Alvarez, Max Holloway and Dan Hooker.
McGregor and Poirier’s fight will headline the UFC pay-per-view map in January and more fights are expected to be added in the coming weeks.
