In Monday Night’s Icon Night episode of Dancing with the stars, AJ McLean and his partner Cheryl Burke were knocked out by the judges, and to put it simply, Burke is not happy. The duo sat down with Entertainment tonight after their elimination, and Burke expressed concern whether the judges’ scoring system was inconsistent.
“What are the rules?” Burke said. “What do you think? What are you expecting? Are the rules the same as when Len was here, or is it different? Is it a ballroom competition or not? It’s simple. The dance pro’s comment referred to Len Goodman, a former judge on the show who was unable to film this season because he was unable to return to the United States due to COVID-19 travel restrictions. Goodman has a solid ballroom background and a reputation for being the toughest judge to focus on official ballroom technique.
“There are rules in the ballroom, and it was a ballroom show, I thought“Burke continued.” It’s just not consistent. Burke raised the issue of “breaking the hold,” which should lead to a point deduction in many ballroom dances, including the fast step she and McLean danced, as well as the “Si tango”. you can’t break the grip in one quick step, but you give perfect scores when people break the grip, what are the rules? ”said Burke, probably referring to Kaitlyn Bristowe and Artem Chigvintsev’s perfect score more early in the evening for their Argentine tango.
“I think the judges score the celebrities against themselves,” said Burke. “I don’t think AJ and Nelly, for example, are on the same level. If AJ did what Nelly did, they wouldn’t give him the same score. on another pedestal. “
Unlike McLean and Burke, Nelly and her partner Daniella Karagach went through last night’s episode in the semi-finals. Burke was shocked at her team’s elimination, saying, “I’ve choreographed her other two routines for the semi-finals already. Normally I’m not that confident, but I was like, ‘Of course, there is no way [we’ll get eliminated]. ‘”
And although McLean called his surprise elimination a “major disappointment,” he seemed to agree with the judges’ final decision. “I’ve always been the type to walk away from any situation with ease and grace and with a lot of gratitude,” said McLean. “Honestly to God, I have made a lot of great friends here, both on and off the stage.”
The show’s semi-finals will air next Monday at 8 p.m. EST on ABC.
