Syracuse, NY – Syracuse coaching staff and class 2022 engagement Dior Johnson have agreed to go their separate ways, according to sources.
Johnson made the announcement on his Instagram page. This decision was confirmed by another source close to Johnson.
The source said Johnson spoke with Syracuse coaching staff before making his public announcement.
Johnson, a 6-foot-3 guard considered one of the top 10 rookies in Class 22, enlisted in Syracuse in February. But it has undergone a tumultuous series of changes in recent months.
Johnson attended Mayfair High School in Lakeview, Calif., Last year as a sophomore. This was his third school in the past two years, as he previously attended Saugerties (NY) High School and IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida.
Johnson transferred to Oak Hill Academy in Mouth of Wilson, Va. This fall. According to sources, the Syracuse coaches backed the decision, seeing Oak Hill as a school that would benefit Johnson both athletically and academically.
However, Johnson suffered a stress reaction to his foot in early September. He had his foot placed in a boot. Initially, Oak Hill coach Steve Smith said Johnson would be sidelined for about three weeks, but would return in time for the Warriors’ season opener on October 27.
But Johnson abruptly left Oak Hill to return to his mother’s home in California. He made the decision without the knowledge of the SU coaches.
Johnson recently enrolled in Centennial High School in Corona, California.
Now it looks like Johnson and the Syracuse coaching staff, including head coach Jim Boeheim and assistant Gerry McNamara, were both ready to move on.
Johnson will reopen his recruiting, but it remains to be seen if he will ever play college basketball. He could decide to play professionally abroad or sign with the G-League, which has started offering bigger contracts to elite high school players who are not yet eligible for the NBA draft.
