President Donald Trump and President-elect Joe Biden both marked Veterans Day by honoring fallen military heroes in grim wreath-laying ceremonies on Wednesday.
Trump, making his first public appearance in days, helped lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in a rainy Arlington National Cemetery. Trump made no remarks, but touched the crown and saluted as “Taps” was played.
Despite several aides and senior officials recently testing positive for the coronavirus, which followed a crowded election night at the White House last week, the President, Vice President Mike Pence, their spouses and Veterans Affairs Secretary Robert Wilkie did not did not wear masks during the ceremony, ignore signs at the entrance that they were needed.
The cemetery also tweeted a reminder of the rules applicable to visitors on Wednesday morning.
“All visitors must adhere to social distancing requirements and wear face covers on the cemetery grounds,” the tweet read.
Biden, meanwhile, appeared to wear two masks as he laid a wreath at the Korean War Memorial in Philadelphia. The president-elect was accompanied by his wife Jill Biden, who also wore a mask, but he did not speak during the brief ceremony.
Earlier Wednesday, Biden tweeted to veterans that he would be a president who “respects your sacrifice, understands your service and will never betray the values you fought so courageously for.”
