LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) – As an experimental COVID-19 vaccine continues to advance, the concert industry gears up for a potential return to live events in the coming months.
Ticketmaster is working on a plan to use smart phones to check whether customers have been vaccinated or tested for the coronavirus, according to Billboard.
While the plan is still in its early stages, Billboard reports that the process would involve fans using the Ticketmaster app in partnership with medical information companies and vaccine and testing distributors.
When purchasing a ticket, fans would be required to verify their vaccine status or prove that they have tested negative for the coronavirus within 72 hours of the concert dates. Regional health authorities would determine the length of coverage for any test.
After being tested, customers would allow a lab to share their results with a health pass company such as IBM or CLEAR, according to the report. If any of the conditions were met, the health pass company would verify this information with Ticketmaster, who would then deliver the tickets to the customer.
Any fan who has tested positive or failed to verify their immunization status will be denied access to the event.
While details are still unclear, the report says Ticketmaster would only receive verification of a customer’s status and would not retain or access medical records. All data exchanges should comply with medical confidentiality laws.
Like other live event companies, Ticketmaster has struggled as the coronavirus pandemic has forced the cancellation and / or postponement of sports, concerts and other events in Southern California and across the world.
In April, the online ticket giant initially offered refunds for canceled, postponed or rescheduled events, but ultimately made it clear that the site would only refund canceled events.
