It didn’t take long for passer Takk McKinley to find a new home as the Cincinnati Bengals announced on Wednesday they had claimed the former first-round pick, adding it alongside their first seven. The Atlanta Falcons officially parted ways with McKinley on Monday, relinquishing the 25-year-old after a row between the two teams.
McKinley, who was selected by the club in the first round of the 2017 UCLA Draft, had been looking to get out of Atlanta since last season. It looked like he was going to be processed around the trade deadline this year, but that never happened. At this point, McKinley took to social media claiming the Falcons turned down offers that were viable for him.
“These Falcons turned down a second-round pick when I asked to be traded last year,” McKinley wrote. on Twitter at the time. “The same Falcons turned down a fifth and sixth round pick among several teams when I asked to be traded this year. I have only 17.5 career sacks.”
As the relationship continued to deteriorate, Atlanta made the decision to simply cut losses and move on, clearing the way for him to land with the Bengals. Cincinnati were on the hunt for a passing assist after simply handing longtime passer Carlos Dunlap to the Seattle Seahawks on the deadline. For the season, Zac Taylor’s team have just 11 sacks, which is tied for fourth in the NFL.
McKinley also appears to have been a fairly popular figure on the waiver thread. According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, the San Francisco 49ers, Las Vegas Raiders and Cleveland Browns also argued, but it was the Bengals who ultimately won for his services.
The passer has been limited to just four games this season due to a groin injury he has suffered since Week 2. During that time, the 6-foot-2, 230-pound player n ‘only has eight tackles, seven quarterback hits and a sack. For his career (49 games, 25 starts), the former 26th pick has 17.5 sacks, 22 tackles for a loss and 45 quarterback hits.
