During the Miss USA pageant, Branch made headlines when she spoke out against the gun ban, citing her own childhood experiences with guns.
“As a person who grew up in a house with guns, I learned early on how to load, how to shoot and gun safety,” she said at the event. “I think education should be accessible to everyone. I believe we should require people to take training and safety courses before they can buy a gun and before they get a license. I think it’s important not to ban guns …. I think it’s our fair Second Amendment and we just need more security on that.
Asya told PEOPLE that while she understands her statement can be polarizing, she spoke from her heart nonetheless.
“I knew I was speaking from my heart, I was speaking honestly and honestly, and that’s what I really feel,” she says. “And in this country, we are entitled to our opinions.”
