Penn State running back Journey Brown is retiring from football after being diagnosed with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a condition in which heart muscle becomes unusually thick.

Brown broke the news in a statement on Twitter on Wednesday:

Nittany Lions Head Coach James franklin told reporters the condition was discovered during the COVID-19 test but is not linked to the virus.

“While not related to COVID, we learned about this in early September. (…) The entire organization rallied behind Journey and her family,” Franklin said.

Brown did not play during the 2020 season, but no clue has been given as to his status other than being linked to the disease. The junior was coming off a strong 2019 campaign, rushing for 890 yards and 12 touchdowns, and he was due to start running back for the Nittany Lions. The last game of his career was a performance of 202 yards and two touchdowns against Memphis in the Cotton Bowl.

Devyn Ford has started racing for a disappointing Penn State team, entering the 0-3 weekend of the season.
