Assuming the TV adaptation of Showtime Halo never made it to the small screen (and given this property’s rocky path through Hollywood, that’s no guarantee), the series will carry one of the most famous gaming voices in the series world. Halo hired a new – uh, old – well, no old, but one before – Actress Cortana in a recent redesign session. Get the details below.
According to IGN, actress Jen Taylor, who lent her velvety voice to the Cortana artificial intelligence unit in every mainline Halo video game, has been hired to once again lend that distinctive voice to the AI character in Showtime’s upcoming live-action series. Taylor replaces the actress Natascha McElhone (The Truman Show, Ronin), who had previously been hired to play Cortana and play a live-action character named Dr Catherine Halsey, who is the creator of Cortana in the Halo universe.
Here’s an interesting detail: IGN reports that “Due to planning difficulties caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, McElhone can no longer complete her job as Cortana – but will continue as Halsey. Big Hollywood productions like this have the resources to carry vocal recording equipment all over the world and capture actors performing remotely, sometimes even having the actors manage the equipment themselves. You would think that a global pandemic, in which many actors pay even more attention to the jobs they hold, would make it easier for someone to do the voiceover job, not more difficult. But maybe the scheduling difficulties meant that McElhone had another acting job that has now suddenly returned to number one, and she couldn’t give Cortana her full attention.
In games, Cortana is essentially a holographic character. At this time, it’s still unclear if Taylor will be doing performance capture work to make Cortana look like her, or if she will just provide her voice to the character. Previously, Taylor voiced Cortana and Dr. Catherine Halsey through multiple games, including Halo, Halo 2, Halo 3, Halo: scope, Halo 4, Halo 5: Guardians, and the next one Infinite Halo, as well as the TV mini-series Halo 4: Advance Until Dawn and Halo: Reach’s Fall. She also provided the voice of Microsoft’s virtual assistant on Windows devices, which is called Cortana after the Halo character.
Showtime has worked for years to bring this game to the small screen, describing the show as “an epic 26th century conflict between humanity and an alien threat known as the Covenant.” Halo will weave deeply drawn personal stories with action, adventure and a richly imagined vision for the future. It doesn’t have a premiere date yet.
