As their Georgia Senate race heads to a runoff in January, the mud intensifies between Senator Kelly Loeffler and her Democratic challenger Raphael Warnock.

A Republican spokesman called an allegation from a case almost two decades ago “disgusting” and demanded that Warnock clarify it further.

Warnock and another minister were accused of obstructing a child abuse investigation at a church-run camp in 2002 – but the charges were dropped months later.

“It’s no surprise that as Reverend Warnock’s support grows the bogus attacks begin,” a Warnock campaign spokesperson told Fox News. “The truth is he was protecting the rights of young people to make sure they had a lawyer or a parent when questioned. Law enforcement officials then apologized and praised him for his assistance in this investigation.

Warnock and the minister were charged after police said they found themselves between officers investigating allegations of abuse and camp counselors, who were teenage church workers, according to the Baltimore Sun. Warnock said he was just making sure the teens were allowed to have a lawyer during questioning.

“What exactly was going on there?” asked Loeffler spokesperson Stephen Lawson. “What was the nature of the child abuse? What was his involvement? If he wants Georgian voters to believe everything he says, he has to be frank and explain what happened.

Another decades-old detail has also reappeared around Warnock.

Prior to working at the Baltimore Church, he worked at a New York City that hosted and celebrated the late Cuban dictator Fidel Castro.
