Why Michigan State Basketball’s Tom Izzo is ‘excited’ for the 2021 recruiting class
Tom Izzo breaks down the 2021 Michigan State Basketball recruiting class of Jaden Akins, Pierre Brooks II and Max Christie on Wednesday, November 11, 2020.
It’s another elite recruiting class for Tom Izzo, who has the potential to become some of the best in college basketball history if Emoni Bates reclassifies and Enoch Boakye joins him.
Even without them, the trio of five-star Max Christie and four-star Jaden Akins and Pierre Brooks II give Izzo the kind of guards he cherishes – long, skilled, athletic and tough.

Here’s a look at Michigan State Basketball’s No. 6 recruiting class in 2021, as it looks after signing day Wednesday:
* Rankings are from 247SportsComposite.
Measurable: 6 feet 6 inches, 190 pounds.
Ranking: No. 15 overall, No. 1 shooter.
Buzz: Christie is one of the best shooters in the country, a three-tiered scoring threat who can create her own shot on the outside and attack the rebound rim. He fits the Izzo mold of a Steve Smith or Denzel Valentine with his ability to distribute and bounce, and Christie could play all three point guard.
Her passing will be critical to maintaining the flow of the ball that Izzo’s teams have enjoyed over the past few seasons, Christie’s ability to grab a board, get out and run and hit pull-up jumpers will enhance the transition play of the players. Spartans.
Measurable: 6-3, 170.
Ranking: No. 62 overall, No. 11 playmaker.
Buzz: Izzo said the Spartans “could have draft flight” with the type of jumping ability that Akins has shown. Lean and stiff, Akins plays the point guard with an offensive mindset and can finish at the rim with force – a rarity for Izzo pointers in the past.
Improved shot from the outside could allow the Akins to play more of a combo guard role, but Izzo believes he will already be able to defend multiple positions and has a knack for uplifting others with his passing ability. .
Pierre Brooks II, SG
Measurable: 6-6, 215.
Ranking: No. 68 in total, No. 13 shooter.
Buzz: Brooks continues to strengthen his chiseled frames, a sign of his work ethic. It continues on the pitch, where a coach’s son is one of the live guys who become Izzo’s favorites. Brooks has the physical maturity to step back small guards and the athleticism to execute the break, hit a jumper in half-court, or finish with a flush either way.
For greater guard, he also has spike-shaped ball handling skills to attack the rebound and a high basketball IQ.
