The Baltimore Ravens offense took the league by storm in 2019, breaking the team’s one-season running record as Lamar Jackson sliced defenses each week en route to an MVP award. While that was the case last year, it looks like opposing defensive coordinators took advantage of the offseason to dissect Baltimore’s attack and now have it pegged it to a point where they know what’s to come. That’s, at least, how Jackson sees it, telling The Rich Eisen Show Wednesday that players know what the Ravens are going to run.
“They call our parts, stuff like that,” Jackson told Eisen, as transcribed by NFL.com. “They know what we’re doing. Sometimes things don’t go our way if they beat us up.”
When in a bit of a hurry, Jackson said he could hear defenders calling the Ravens ahead of the snap.
“Yeah, they definitely do,” Jackson said. “Like, ‘run’ and stuff like that. ‘Watch out for that, watch out for that.’ Sometimes that’s what happens. “
Understandably, knowing what’s to come will be a huge disadvantage for the Ravens, who live off a dynamic and rushed attack with multiple backs with Jackson. While the offense might be a bit predictable, it still hasn’t stopped Baltimore from averaging 170.1 rushing yards per game, which is the current league high. The Ravens are also averaging 28.4 points per game this season, ranking eighth in the NFL. While this might not be the # 1 place they were sitting in 2019, it’s still not too shabby.
Where the predictability of the Baltimore offense seems to be most painful is in the passing game. Jackson has taken a step back from his MVP season a year ago. In his last five games, the Ravens quarterback has completed just 59.56% of his passes and is averaging 187.4 passing yards per game. He also has seven touchdowns to go with four interceptions on that streak.
As opposing defenses have started to adjust to what Baltimore has brought to the table, perhaps it is time for Greg Roman and his company to return to the lab and create a new wrinkle for these clubs to be able to. manage and keep them on their toes.
