Hello, new Macan!

Porsche

Porsche has published a new book titled Porsche Unseen, which unveils 15 all-new concept cars created from 2005 to 2019, with models ranging from hypercars to electric vans. But I’m not here to talk about any of these amazing concepts – I’m here to talk about a clay model that was slyly placed in the background of one of the photos. What you are looking at, my friends, is the New generation fully electric Macan crossover.

How do you know it’s the new Macan? Well, because it matches the spy photos our friends posted on Autoblog a few weeks ago, and also because it looks like an evolution of the Macan we know and love. The headlights are slimmer and have a Taycan-like shape, and there’s an obvious lack of a grille up front. There is a rectangular socket on the lower part of the front bumper as well as slim vertical elements on the sides which could be additional lights or sockets. Otherwise, the front of the new Macan is slick and defined by a sharp horizontal line below the headlights.

Moving around the sides of the car there are more defined hips than on the current Macan and a sleeker, more coupe roofline. The Macan’s trapezoidal design element above the side skirts remains, with the skirts themselves looking a little more aggressive. I can’t see the rear, but Autoblog’s spy shots show an active rear spoiler and the Macan will almost certainly have a full-width light bar.

Porsche first announced that the next-gen Macan will be fully electric in February 2019. Unlike the Taycan, which rides on the J1 platform shared with the upcoming Audi E-Tron GT, the Macan will sit on the PPE Platform (Premium Platform Electric) which was co-developed with Audi and will support a bunch of other Volkswagen Group electric cars. Expect a charging capacity of 800 volts and very quick acceleration.

The electric Macan will go into production at some point over the next two years at the Porsche plant in Leipzig, which currently produces the existing Macan and Panamera. Speaking of the existing Macan, it will continue to run alongside the new electric for a few more years and will get another minor refresh to update the interior. It’s unclear if the Macan EV will have a different name, but it’s a possibility.
