Phil Jurkovec is the latest name in a long list of quarterbacks coming to Notre Dame with huge expectations to see things not turn out the way both sides had likely hoped.
Jurkovec entered the recruiting class of 2018 and saw his first game action in the same game, Ian Book took over the starting reigns, a resounding victory over Wake Forest at the end of September this fall.
But Book’s success mixed with the team’s success meant playing time was much harder to come by than many thought for Jurkovec.
Jurkovec, now Boston College starting quarterback and current ACC leader in passing yards, speaks to the media
“Notre Dame was the school of my dreams growing up,” Jurkovec said, “There are a lot of good things about Notre Dame: the school, how much they earn, the culture of it, the players . There are a lot of good people out there. For me, football has really changed. I was debating changing positions because I don’t think I could have done another year just sitting on the bench. I had to going to play somewhere, I was really depressed.
“I was about not playing quarterback, at that point I was talking to my family and they were like, ‘You have to go somewhere to play’
“I was trying to play something, it’s really hard not being able to play and not being able to show what you can do. It became frustrating for me and I just wanted to be on the pitch as best I could. – Phil Jurkovec
Jurkovec also added that he still texted regularly with most of this Notre Dame recruiting class of 2018.
On Tuesday night, Notre Dame defensive lineman Ade Ogundeji praised his former teammate he will face this Saturday, calling Jurkovec a great teammate and a great guy before calling him “a creator of game that can make every throw “.
Brian Kelly was also very complimentary of Jurkovec when he entered Boston College Week on Monday:
“What he’s doing this year in the movies is doing plays outside of the offensive realm, which he was very used to doing in high school and when he was here too. Outside of the pocket, it’s a great jammer. He can run on the run, he has a strong arm, a tall build, and a tough kid. – Brian Kelly
Jurkovec has led Boston College to a 5-3 record so far this season while picking up an ACC-leading 2,083 yards with 15 touchdowns and three rushing touchdowns for just four interceptions.
