- In a new interview with In the style, Jason Momoa says he was “completely in debt” after filming The iron Throne.
- He has since landed major roles in Justice League, Aquaman, and Dune, elevating him to Hollywood’s A list.
- Prior to Thrones, Momoa appeared on Baywatch: Hawaii and Stargate: Atlantis.
Jason Momoa launched his career with a 44-episode series Baywatch: Hawaii, and later, a key role in the cult sci-fi series Stargate: Atlantis–but these shows are probably do not where you saw the actor for the first time. Apart from Aquaman, of course, most people probably recognize Momoa as the vicious and powerful warrior Khal Drogo from the first season of The iron Throne.
You’d think playing a key role in a number of TV series, and possibly one of the greatest shows of all time, would lead to fame and wealth. But in a recent interview with In the style, Momoa revealed that was actually quite far from the case.
“I mean we were starving after The iron ThroneThe 41-year-old star said. “I couldn’t find a job. It is very difficult when you have babies and you are completely in debt.
Momoa had been in a relationship with actress Lisa Bonet since 2005 (the couple officially married in 2017), and at the time, they were raising two children (a daughter born in 2007 and a son born in 2008). A quick glance at Momoa’s IMDB confirms its drought period; in the years after Thrones and before Justice League, his resume is filled with smaller scale TV projects and indie films such as the underrated dystopian adventure thriller The bad lot.
In May 2019, Momoa shared an old photo on his Instagram recounting a trip he took with a friend during his most difficult times financially. Thrones. “During the filming of GOT we took a little break. We had to go bankrupt to get home so we hired a panel van aka UHAUL in Belfast and drove around beautiful IRELAND in search of the biggest pint of Guinness, ”he wrote. “It turns out it’s perfect everywhere.”

Eventually, of course, things changed; in 2016, Momoa had been cast and was set to appear as Aquaman in both Justice League and Aquaman, which were both big box office wins.
Now he’s not just doing well enough to face a rewarding film career – the next Dune might be his best role and best movie yet – but he has enough resources to fund his hobby of collecting and refurbishing old cars. This summer he even refurbished the first aid on Bonet, a 1965 Ford Mustang. Not bad for a guy who spent time ten years ago riding a UHaul.
