While the PS5 offers backward compatibility for PS4 games, Sony has released a short list of PS4 games that would not be compatible with the new console. Ubisoft added its own list of incompatible games, but then deleted it, leaving gamers to wonder if the biggest game on the list, Assassin’s Creed Syndicate, was actually PS5 compatible or not.
In fact, the answer is… sort of. Kotaku launched the game on the PS5 only to find that it performed well, but visually plagued with some very distracting shadow flickers. Depending on how patient you are with this sort of thing, the issue may make it unplayable for some, or just minor enough to ignore.
Kotaku also reported that the game displayed a small warning message when booting on the PS5, which read, “You may experience unexpected gaming behavior while playing this PS4 game on your PS5 console.”
The same warning appears on other games intended to be fully compatible with the PS5, including Batman: Return To Arkham, as seen in GameSpot’s PS5 review. Return to Arkham also sported a small graphics glitch when played on the PS5, but nothing on the scale of what happens in Syndicate.
It’s likely that some glitchy games will perform better on the PS5 as patches are released, although games like Syndicate may not be live for a patch due to age and poor sales.
