The Rockets went all-in with Russell Westbrook and now he wants to come out.
Westbrook has appeared to acclimatize well to the Rockets as his season in Houston has gone on, averaging over 30 points per game the last two months of a coronavirus-shortened regular season. The Rockets traded center Clint Capela on the deadline and that helped clear the way for Westbrook to attack the rim.
Its star partnership with James Harden seemed to be working, and the team reached the semi-finals of the Western Conference, where Houston was bounced back by the eventual Lakers champion in five games. Now The Athletic is reporting Westbrook wants a Knicks trade among interested contenders.
But why? Athletic says:
Westbrook, according to sources, has been signaling for some time now that he would like to see some big changes in Rockets culture. Specifically, his desire for accountability, discipline and team-wide structure was discussed with team officials. Throughout the season, Westbrook was the constant presence that held Harden accountable and the two close friends had several verbal exchanges that sources described as “tense, but necessary.”
The Post reported that the Rockets are resisting trading Westbrook, 32, 2017 MVP. It’s unclear what they could pay back given the three years and $ 132 million remaining on his contract.
And The Athletic added that Harden, despite reports of discontent, is “on lockdown” for the upcoming season which begins next month.
Reports, however, continued an offseason of upheaval in Houston. Coach Mike D’Antoni and general manager Daryl Morey have both separated. Athletic further reported that forward PJ Tucker, a key defender and 3-point shooter, is “angry” with his contract. And that sixth man, Eric Gordon, was also frustrated with his role alongside Harden and Westbrook.
All eyes are on new braintrust Rockets from GM Rafael Stone and coach Stephen Silas to see what will happen next.
