If Joe Gomez needs inspiration as he begins to recover from another devastating knee injury, he won’t have to look very far.
Liverpool have confirmed that Gomez had successfully undergone surgery on a tendon in his left knee after sustaining the issue during his training with England on Tuesday.
As the Reds refuse to rule out a return to action before the end of the season, it’s clear the 23-year-old faces an important fate on the sidelines.
Gomez forged a strong bond with Virgil van Dijk, both in terms of center-back couple on the pitch and friendship off the pitch.
And that relationship can now help the duo inspire each other on their way back to peak form, with Van Dijk likely to be out of the campaign as he recovers from an anterior cruciate ligament problem suffered on the last month.
Rehabilitation after such a serious injury can be a long and lonely place.
Gomez, of course, has been here before, having suffered a similar cruciate ligament injury just months after joining Liverpool in the summer of 2015.

He benefited from his work alongside, at least for the first seven months of his recovery, former Liverpool striker Danny Ings, who suffered an ACL injury during a training session at Melwood on the same day than the reverse of Gomez.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is another Liverpool player who suffered a long-term injury after also damaging his anterior cruciate ligament in April 2018.
He was joined during his recovery by Rhian Brewster, who was looking to regain his form after knee and ankle issues that ultimately kept him from going out for 18 months.
And, speaking halfway through his rehab, Oxlade-Chamberlain revealed the difference that can be made by not having to go it alone.
“You’re just kind of left in a quiet room doing your gym and it’s those times that are the hardest, especially when it’s a long process and it’s going to be like that every day,” he says. .
“So it’s good to have a young boy that I can kind of guide through that too. Rhian has been awesome, he’s a great boy and I don’t really have to tell him too much.
“Most of the time he’s watching me, I’ll be honest.
“He’s always so positive and he just has that youthful enthusiasm about him that is really going to be around him, that keeps me going.”
Van Dijk is the player Gomez has admired since the Dutchman arrived at Anfield almost three years ago.
They supported each other on the pitch as Liverpool headed for the Premier League title last season.
Now they will look after each other again – albeit under completely different circumstances.
