Patricio Freire is not paid by the hour.

The Bellator lightweight and featherweight champion put his last belt on the line Thursday night against Pedro Carvalho in a game that doubled as a Bellator Grand Prix quarter-final match. And he wasted little time doing the job, winning the 2:10 first round knockout at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn.

With the win, “Pitbull” advances to the semi-finals to meet Emmanuel Sanchez, who secured a unanimous decision over Daniel Weichel earlier on the main card of the night.

SBG Ireland’s Carvalho (11-4 MMA, 4-1 BMMA) was touted for his ground play, but Freire (31-4 MMA, 19-4 BMMA) scored an early takedown, brought Carvalho to the mat and was worked for Carvalho’s chokes is back.

Carvalho rose to his feet, but the end was near. Freire hit Carvalho with a right hand, then let him down with a fierce right second. Referee Mike Beltran immediately stirred things up.

“He’s tough, and I respect that,” Freire said of Sanchez. “Now he’s more dynamic. I can’t wait to fight. “

The win was Friere Bellator’s 19th win, which is a promotional record. It was his sixth consecutive victory, his fourth successful title defense and his 22nd career victory.

Carvalho has had a six-game winning streak.
