Filmmaker Chris Columbus says Disney + remake is ‘a waste of time’ and unoriginal

Chris Columbus isn’t a fan of the Disney + Home Alone reboot.

The 62-year-old filmmaker told Insider on Thursday that he had not been contacted about the project and thought it “ is a waste of time ” creatively.

Columbus, who has also directed films such as Ms. Doubtfire, Nine Month and Only the Lonely, said it would be impossible to regenerate the magic of the 1990 holiday classic.

‘What’s the point? I firmly believe that you don’t remake movies that had the longevity of Home Alone, ”said Columbus. “You are no longer going to create lightning in a bottle. It just won’t happen. So why do it? It’s like doing a paint-by-numbers version of a Disney animated movie – a live-action version of that.

‘What’s the point? It has been done. Do your own thing. Even if you fail miserably, at least you’ve found something original.

Columbus said he “ could even be blamed ” himself with Home Alone 2: Lost in New York in 1992, which he described as “ essentially a remake of the first Home Alone. ”

He said of the sequel, which featured a cameo by future President Donald Trump: ‘Does this have to exist? Yeah, because some of these stunts really make me laugh, but I just don’t believe it should be done.

Columbus said it would be impossible to regenerate the magic of the 1990 holiday classic, starring Macaulay Culkin and Joe Pesci.

Columbus referred to the take off from Stoned Alone that Ryan Reynolds was working on in June 2018 with Fox before his merger with Disney.

“God only knows what it will be – a stoner version of ‘Home Alone?'” He said. “Listen, have fun. I just feel, do something new. Life is short.’

Home Alone is one of the last franchises that Disney + has sought to breathe new life into with a reboot, as it is also working on follow-ups to Saved By The Bell, Gossip Girl, and The Fresh Prince of Bel Air.

Columbus spoke of the release coinciding with the 30th anniversary of the original film’s theatrical release on November 16, 1990.

Macaulay Culkin was the star of the film, which starred Daniel Stern, Joe Pesci and Catherine O’Hara, as well as the last actors John Heard and John Candy.

The film grossed $ 476 million worldwide on a budget of $ 18 million and also won two Oscar nominations for composer John Williams – with Leslie Bricusse for Best Original Song for Somewhere in My Memory; and Best Original Music for the Film.

The reboot is expected to include Archie Yates, Ellie Kemper and Rob Delaney, with Dan Mazer in the director’s chair.
