Apple’s latest and greatest desktop operating system, macOS Big Sur, is finally available for public consumption – just in time for the new Macs.
Big Sur has been in beta since WWDC and is making a host of cosmetic and under-the-hood changes to modernize Apple’s operating system. And, of course, Apple is dropping the old OS X moniker it used for nearly two decades; macOS is a better match for the rest of the company’s software lineup.
Among the notable changes, the user interface looks a lot more similar to iOS in its icons and the use of transparencies. There is a control center that mimics that of mobile devices; the same goes for the new action center. Heck, you can even use iOS style widgets.
But perhaps the biggest change is support for Apple’s new ARM processors, including the powerful M1 chip in the new MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, and Mac Mini. Certainly, the people who buy these computers will not need to upgrade.
You can download the update from the Mac App Store now – just make sure you have a compatible laptop first. And to learn more about the changes to Big Sur, you can read Apple’s post here.
