Former President Barack Obama criticized President Donald Trump’s baseless claims about mass electoral fraud and the GOP leaders who “go with them,” in an interview with CBS News on Wednesday.
Asked about the impact of the president’s unsubstantiated election fraud allegations, Obama said, “They seem motivated, in part, because the president doesn’t like to lose and never admits to losing.”
But he expressed more concern over Republican Party leaders who allow the president.
“I’m more troubled that other Republican officials who clearly know better agree with this, are making him happy that way,” Obama told interviewer Scott Pelley.
“This is one more step in the delegitimization not only of the new Biden administration, but of democracy in general,” he said. “And it is a dangerous road.”
Since President-elect Joe Biden was due to win the election, many Republican lawmakers have yet to recognize him. Meanwhile, Trump has continued to make unproven claims of widespread voter fraud.
The head of the US election administration, who was appointed by the president, said in an interview with Insider that there was “no evidence of widespread electoral fraud” and that the president’s claim “harms the fabric of our nation “.
Trump refused to concede the election, barring the new Biden-Harris administration from receiving the usual aspects of a presidential transition.
The clip for Obama’s interview is part of a full interview that will air Sunday on “60 Minutes.” The interview is part of Obama’s promotion of his new book, “A Promised Land”.
