New futuristic audio technology developed in Israel makes it possible to play music in a person’s head without headphones or wires.
Noveto Systems launches its new desktop device – the SoundBeamer 1.0 – on Friday, promising customers the ability to listen to music, watch TV and play computer games with little chance of disturbing someone else .
The product works by using something called a “sound beam”. It uses a 3D sensing module that locates and then tracks the position of the ear and uses ultrasonic waves to send audio to the listener, creating pockets of sound around their ears.
While sound streaming isn’t new, Noveto has created the first branded consumer item to use the technology and plans to unveil a “smaller, sexier” version of the prototype in time for Christmas 2021.
This week, buyers will have the option of using traditional stereo sound, which will hit both ears evenly, or a 3D option that creates a 360-degree audio experience that envelops the listener, the company said.
“The listening sensation comes straight from a science fiction movie. The 3-D sound is so close that it feels like you’re inside your ears while being in front, above and behind them, ”the Associated Press said after a recent demo.
“The demo includes video clips of the nature of swans on a lake, buzzing bees and a chattering stream, where the listener feels completely transported into the scene.”
Either way, the device knows which ears to target and follows the listener wherever they go without needing to give instructions.
“Most people just say, ‘Wow, I really don’t believe it,’” said Ayana Wallwater, SoundBeamer product manager.
“You don’t believe it because it sounds like a speaker, but no one else can hear it… it supports you and you are in the middle of it all. It’s happening around you, ”she continued.
“You don’t have to tell the device where you are. It doesn’t broadcast to a specific location… It follows you wherever you go. So it’s personally for you – follow you, play whatever you want in your head.
The most that others in the room could hear is a “little” sound, Wallwater explained, but “you don’t get the volume.”
“This is what we dream of,” added the product manager. “A world where we get the sound you want. You don’t need to disturb others, and others are not disturbed by your sound. But you can still interact with them. “
As the device is headphone-less, the listener can still hear other things going on in the room.
Noveto expects the new product to be a headphone-less solution to many of life’s mundane annoyances. Office workers can play music or listen to conference calls without disturbing coworkers, and couples can blow up their favorite horror movie from Metallica’s album with little chance of disturbing their other half.
The new technology is so abnormal that it is difficult for the CEO of the company to put it into words.
“The brain does not understand what it does not know,” said Christophe Ramstein.
When he first tried the device, he wondered how it was different from other listening experiences.
“I thought, ‘Yeah, but is that the same with headphones?’ No, because I have the freedom and it’s like I have the freedom to do whatever I want to do. And I have these sounds playing in my head because something would be going on here, which is difficult to explain as we have no reference to this, ”said the CEO.
He compared the experience to the first time he tried an iPod when the Stylish Listening Device was first created early on.
“I was like, ‘Oh, my God. What is that?’ I think sound radiation is something as disruptive as that, ”Ramstein explained.
“There is something to be said about this that did not exist before. There is the freedom to use it. And it’s really amazing.
