The folks at DXOMark have posted their full review of the iPhone 12 Pro camera system. Overall, Apple’s new line of triple-lens cameras with LiDAR Scanner scored 128, placing it in the top five of DXOMark’s list of best smartphone cameras.
DXOMark explains that the score includes a “photo score of 135” and a “video score of 112”, both of which help the iPhone 12 Pro case. On the other hand, the iPhone 12 Pro took a hit due to its zoom features:
With an overall score of 128 for the DXOMARK camera, the Apple iPhone 12 Pro ranks in the top five in our ranking, beating last year’s 11 Pro Max by four points and replacing it as the best Apple device. from our database. The overall score is based on a high photo score of 135 and a very good video score of 112. With a score of 66, Zoom is the area where the iPhone 12 Pro loses a few points against the best in its class, mainly due to of its telephoto lens offering only 2x optical magnification.
For still photography, DXOMark praises the iPhone 12 Pro’s autofocus system:
In Photo mode, we found the autofocus system to be one of the highlights, providing fast and precise performance in most situations. The device also gets a great score for its preview image which is closer to the final capture than many other high-end devices. Exposure is generally good, but our testers found the dynamic range to be a bit limited, with clipping of highlights and shadows occurring under difficult conditions. Color rendition is accurate under indoor lighting, but color casts may be visible in outdoor images; and while the camera also offers good detail retention if you’re not shooting in very dark conditions, you can often find image noise in indoor and low-light shots.
When it comes to the iPhone 12 Pro’s video features, DXOMark said this is where the device “really shines”.
the testers also liked the rendering of colors and skin tones, but also observed white balance casts. 4K images show good levels of detail until the light levels drop too much, and the autofocus does a good job of keeping things in focus, even in dynamic scenes. The stabilization system also works great, keeping things steady and smooth when walking with the camera in your hands or when standing still while recording.

As always, it’s important to keep in mind that DXOMark’s testing methodology and reliability is often called into question and contested, primarily on the grounds that camera quality is subjective and the awarding of a ” score ”is difficult.
