The New York Knicks brain trust took a trip down south a few weeks ago to work on Florida State wing Devin Vassell and Alabama point guard Kira Lewis Jr. to watch Vassell and Lewis, and apparently walked away impressed with both.
But now the game begins. If they want Vassell or Lewis, both players will likely be available when the Knicks pick at No.8. Then again, they could drop a bit, and maybe – just maybe – be available if the Knicks come back.
The front office is thinking precisely about such a scenario, according to Marc Berman.
“Sources have indicated that the Knicks are wondering if Vassell or Lewis deserved the eighth pick or if they would have to go down a few notches to gain an asset, with the option of still catching one or the other.
Trading and getting the player you love is every GM and draft addict’s dream. Can it be done? This is the tricky part. First of all, you need a partner. Rumor has it the Celtics are open to selling the No.14 pick. Would a player like Vassell or Lewis be available at 14? I have my doubts.
One thing I find interesting: Vassell is often compared to another wing defender in this draft, Auburn’s Isaac Okoro. But the Knicks only interviewed Okoro and didn’t resolve it. Does that mean the front office prefers Vassell?
Vassell discussed working with Thibodeau in this video. (WARNING: Child’s voice got BASS.)
Devin Vassell worked with the Knicks at a church in Georgia:
“[Coach Thibodeau] is a great coach … everything went very well with the Knicks, it would be a blessing if I could be part of this team ” pic.twitter.com/lS9kwiBvpC
