As the Washington football team prepares to start Alex smith this week against the Detroit Lions, head coach Ron rivera made it known that he would like to see a backup Dwayne Haskins learn from the NFL veteran. Haskins has been the subject of commercial rumors this season. He started the 2020 campaign as a Washington starting quarterback, but fell out of favor with Rivera. As a result, Haskins was demoted to Kyle Allen.
Allen elevated the attack on Washington. However, he suffered a late season ankle injury and now Smith is likely to be the starter the rest of the year.
This will keep Haskins in a backup role. Rivera believes this role could help her continue to learn the job.
Professional Football Hall of Fame Michael irvin does not agree. He joined 106.7 The Fan via NBC Washington and believes Haskins would be better served by getting another opportunity to learn from the field.
“I understand that they made the decision and that certain things are happening,” Irvin said. “They made decisions, the next thing you know they were sending Dwayne Haskins, kid, home, ”Irvin said. And I got pissed off because as soon as they made the decision one of our reporters came out and said the coaches said they wanted him to be, show more leadership come early and leave late . I was like stop, stop guys, you already benched it, let’s not ruin it. You know what I mean, let’s not destroy it.
Rivera believes Haskins has legitimate talent in the NFL. Haskins started 11 games for Washington and earned three wins.
This season, Haskins has thrown for 939 yards and four touchdowns. He also threw three interceptions as Washington’s attack struggled efficiently.
Still, Rivera would like Haskins to treat the NFL game. He told Rich Eisen that there was still a future for Haskins with the team.
“Funny, I put the guy on a bench and it’s like everyone thinks his career is here in Washington,” Rivera said on The Rich Eisen Show. “It’s not. There is potential, there is opportunity. The kid has an NFL arm, it’s just about development.
Haskins is said to have worked with the Boy Scout team before being promoted to the backup role. He has a chance of potentially gaining a second chance to start if Rivera turns to him at any point before the end of the season.
Irvin would like to see the starting situation in Washington remain fluid. This will give Haskins a chance to get back on the pitch.
“I would bring Alex back in there, but I’m looking for another opportunity for the kid to come back in there to see if there’s anything he learned from sitting down,” Irvin said.
Washington faces the Lions on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. ET. Smith will likely make his first start since 2018 after recovering from a horrific leg injury.
As for Haskins, Rivera sees this as a chance for him to learn from the NFL veteran as he continues his NFL career.

“It’s good for Dwayne,” Rivera told local reporters. “He will have the opportunity to see how to truly prepare for a game as a starter and I hope Dwayne takes it that way. It’s an opportunity to learn and grow. “
