The episode took an even more devastating turn when Gray herself was found by a co-worker passed out in the hospital parking lot. The next thing viewers saw was the character of Pompeo strolling down a beach and locking her late husband’s eyes.

On keeping Dempsey’s return to the series a secret, Vernoff noted that “what happened was pretty epic in terms of keeping it a secret.”

“We haven’t told the writers for a very long time. When she walks and looks like someone is calling her, and she says “Derek?” In the screenplay, I had it as Ellis Gray, ”Vernoff told The Times. “And she said, ‘Mum?’ We read it at the table that way. No one knew what we were doing – so much so that when the crew showed up the day we shot the scene, no one knew. It was top secret. “
