Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz has been accused of leaving timeouts on the table during games. He wasn’t going to let that happen on Friday night against rival Minnesota.
Ferentz used his three timeouts with Iowa to 35-0 and 19 seconds playing at the frigid TCF Bank Stadium in Minneapolis. Minnesota, who had left many of their starters to try to score and avoid a shutout, were the first to call the time out after hitting the Iowa 4-yard line. Iowa then used its three timeouts.
Minnesota scored in the next game, a 4-yard pass from Tanner Morgan to Rashod Bateman, but Iowa prevailed 35-7 to retain the Floyd of Rosedale Trophy.
“They called a time out, I guess, to see what we were doing and reconsider,” Ferentz said. “We just wanted to make sure we got a good feel for what they were doing. There is no point in taking them on the bus with us. [The media] have reminded me of this a few times over the past 22 years.
“I thought we were going to take Floyd with us and leave the timeouts here.”
Ferentz and Minnesota coach PJ Fleck had a very quick handshake after the game.
“They called three timeouts, I don’t know,” Fleck said. “I have no idea what happened.”
Iowa retained Floyd with their sixth straight win over Minnesota, the Hawkeyes ‘longest streak in a series that began in 1891. The Hawkeyes’ social media team celebrated the victory by poking fun at Fleck’s motto. “Row the Boat”.

Iowa, which started the season 0-2, has won its last two games by a combined score of 84-14.
