Netflix’s holiday extravaganza “Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey” offers plenty of seasonal dazzles. But it includes a groovy song that is unlike any other.
Forest Whitaker plays the role of Jeronicus Jangle. His glory days as a revered toy maker seemingly behind him, he has now grown into a heavy pawnshop. But a woman, Mrs. Johnston, still sees the light in him, and his flirtations turn into a song called “Miles and Miles.”
Ms Johnston is played by British actress Lisa Davina Phillip, and she delivers a performance tinged with gospel and R&B that can’t help but cheer up as she takes her to the skies.
Director David E. Talbert took inspiration from singing gospel legends like Tramaine Hawkins, and guided Phillip in channeling that energy. It also features a trio of well-dressed dancers who accompany Phillip on the song, his Pips, if you will.
Narrating the sequence, Talbert explained how he worked with his choreographer, Ashley Wallen (“The Greatest Showman”), and composer Philip Lawrence to evoke the vibe of Motown bands like the Temptations, as well as the Minneapolis sound popularized by Prince.
