Princess Diana and Prince Charles divorced in 1996 just a year before her death in August 1997. This season of The Crown will feature the heir to the throne’s marriage to Lady Diana Spencer and the subsequent fallout.
What did Princess Diana’s wedding dress look like?
Diana’s wedding dress is perhaps the most iconic wedding dress of all time. In true 80s style, the dress was a huge, voluminous gown in ivory taffeta and antique lace.
It was designed by husband and wife duo Elizabeth and David Emanuel. Diana asked the designers to give her the longest royal wedding dress train in history, so her dress was 25 feet long.
A small blue was sewn into the waistband to represent something blue in the famous wedding rhyme. For “something old”, Diana looked at the antique lace on her dress from a British silk farm.
Back then, the dress, decorated with 10,000 real pearls, was valued at £ 9,000, or around £ 35,000 today. Princess Diana’s veil was ivory silk tulle, a simpler affair than the dress.

What did Princess Diana’s wedding tiara look like?
Another something old was Diana’s wedding tiara, which was her family tiara. Many have wondered why Diana was not wearing the Cambridge Lover’s Knot tiara reportedly given to her by the Queen for her wedding, with some suggesting the reason was that the platinum coin was way too heavy.
However, it is actually the deed in aristocratic families for a bride to wear the tiara of her own family and then wear the tiaras of her husband’s family after the wedding.
The Spencer tiara is a scrolled style tiara, which means that the shape features curves that wind up towards the top of the head, like folded scrolls. The tiara was given to the family as a wedding gift in 1919 to a lady Cynthia Hamilton. It features stars and floral designs.
For her wedding perfume, Diana wore Some Flowers by Houbigant. The now iconic scent includes bergamot, galbanum, tuberose, lily of the valley and oak moss, among others.
It is described by Houbigant as “ethereal and courteous”, full of “sweet, sensual, voluptuous flowers”.
Diana was holding a bouquet full of Lily of the Valley, Earl Mountbatten roses, freesia, speedwell, ivy, myrtle, trasdescantia, gardenias, stephanotis and odontolglossum orchid.
Diana’s makeup that day was done by Barbara Daly, who ran the Barbara Daly School of Makeup and Beauty Therapy in Chelsea from 1978. She has done a number of British Vogue covers, including in December 1974 with the model Twiggy.
What happened to Princess Diana’s wedding ring?
Princess Diana’s engagement ring was from Garrad and Diana chose her ring herself from a catalog, a very unusual move.
The sapphire, diamond and white gold ring was purchased in 1981 and cost £ 28,500, which today equates to over £ 100,000.
The ring was inherited by Prince Harry when, after Diana’s tragic death in 1997, he and his brother Harry were given the opportunity to choose an item from his belongings to keep it as a momento of her.
When Prince William made it clear his intention to propose to his longtime girlfriend Kate Middleton, Harry gave her the ring to propose with. And so, decades later, Diana’s ring became the engagement ring of another woman – the woman who would have been her daughter-in-law if the course of history had been different.
A number of royals and aristocrats were present at Diana’s wedding. All members of the European royal family were present except King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia of Spain because Charles and Diana were to stop on British territory in Gibraltar for their honeymoon, a disputed territory.
Many European presidents were present, as was the First Lady of the United States, Nancy Reagan.
For her bridesmaids and pages, Diana had a number of attendants.
They included Lord Nicholas Windsor, Edward van Cutsem, Lady Sarah Armstrong-Jones, India Hicks, Catherine Cameron, Sarah-Jane Gaselee and Clementine Hambro.
