The Mandalorian has revealed that Gideon may be even more sinister than people thought.

The Mandalorian Season 1 quietly built Moff Gideon’s influence from the start, later revealing him as the one behind the hunt for The Child in his final episodes. Gideon has become a force to be reckoned with, a ruthless killer as a former BSI agent. The final shot of the season put the Darksaber in his hands and it was clear he had become a major focus of the series. Now Season 2 reveals more of what Moff Gideon brings, and this dark acquaintance may hold clues to his future plans as the main villain and ruler of the Sith.

Season 2, Episode 3, “Chapter 11: The Heiress” picks up immediately after Episode 2’s appalling argument with the Krykna spiders, giving the frog a much-needed reunion with his partner and reminding Din Djarin why families worth fighting for. But sweet moments don’t last in the rough parts of space, and after finally meeting the Mandalorians he was looking for, Mando enlists for a raid on a departing Imperial freighter.
Despite the fall of the Emperor and the rise of the New Republic, the imperial remnants still hold on to the trained order, which is surprising. The freighter’s crew visual is a coldly ascetic throwback to the look of the original Star wars trilogy, showing armed Stormtroopers in shiny armor and a crew that is as perfectly uniform as if the Battle of Endor had never happened. But the worst surprise is to know to whom the imperial captain answers.
The camera is placed behind the shoulder of the holo-projection at first, but the voice is unmistakable. The freighter and its black market cargo is the latest revelation of the extent of Gideon’s arsenal, and it brings terrible news to the worlds of the Outer Rim. Gideon’s final command to the captain and the chilling way he recites “Long Live the Empire” illustrates a man who will claim victory at all costs.
Sacrificing vital resources without a second thought opens the question of what Gideon already has in his arsenal and the scale of his plans. Gideon’s endgame has chilling implications being that he’s clearly loyal to the idea of restoring the Empire. He’s after The Child, he snatched the Darksaber from the hands of Mandalore’s rightful ruler and left the planet in ruins. He is ambitious, murderous and terrifying. He may already have a personal idea of who should lead a new, even more militant empire with himself as leader.
The deadliest villains are the most human, and Gideon’s cold mastery of order and power is very human in the worst ways humanity has to offer. If he already has enough prescription and a large fleet, he may be ready to be more than The Mandalorian central villain. He’s poised to become the biggest threat this puzzling interregnum will face, years before Palpatine’s dark forces gathered in Exegol.
There is the question of whether Moff Gideon was made aware of Emperor Palpatine’s plans before the Death Star fell, and that may be part of why the hunt for the child began. But Moff Gideon otherwise seems indifferent to the importance of the Force beyond acquiring The Child, and is content to strengthen his power through violence and fear. His actions are reminiscent of General Grievous, ready to use symbols of power regardless of their meaning beyond the influence they have.
Either way, Din Djarin seems destined to continue to clash with Moff Gideon. With new questions in Djarin’s mind about his clan, family, and Mandalore’s history, he will likely understand that he is honored to help recover the stolen Darksaber. This won’t be the first time the Mandalorians have played a pivotal role in the fate of the galaxy, and with a very personal grudge against Moff Gideon, he’s sure to take an explosive head. With what Gideon seems to have in mind for the Emerging Republic, the galaxy should be happy to have their help.
