SOUTHFIELD, Michigan (FOX 2) – Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer has announced that she will hold a 6 p.m. COVID-19 update in Michigan, as cases have exploded in recent weeks, setting a record 8,516 daily cases on Friday with 118 death. On Saturday, 7,072 more cases and 65 deaths were linked to the virus.
Governor Whitmer announced the 6 p.m. press conference on Sunday, a departure from his typical weekday press conference. FOX 2 will broadcast the update to this page at startup.
According to the email from the governor’s office, she will be joined by state medical director Dr. Joneigh Khaldun and Michigan Department of Health and Human Services Director Robert Gordon.
The state said the three will provide an update regarding COVID-19 and make an announcement regarding continued efforts to slow the spread of the virus.
Gov. Whitmer last week urged all vacation plans to be different this year amid escalating cases. She urged the Michiganders not to gather on Thanksgiving with people outside their own homes. If this needs to be done, masks, social distancing, and frequent hand washing indoors are highly recommended.
“We are in the worst part of this pandemic to date. This is the time when medical experts warn and dread since the onset of the pandemic,” Governor Whitmer said.
Michigan’s positivity rate last week was nearly 11%.
Michigan officials also recently rolled out the MI COVID Alert app to help notify possible exposure and tracing contacts.
Authorities are urging everyone to answer the phone if you get a call from the health department. Text messages are also sent before the incoming call.
During this time, everyone is also reminded to keep doing the basic things to stay healthy – wear a mask, wash your hands, and keep your distance from others.
