AOC says it is ‘upset’ by loss of House Democratic majority

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D. Bronx) says she and many others are bitterly disappointed that Democrats have lost their majority in the House of Representatives.

Just one problem: they didn’t.

In a virtual town hall Thursday night, the Bronx-born Democratic socialist was asked to comment on the Democratic Party’s disappointing performance in this year’s congressional races.

“So you know, of course, the loss of the House majority is just extremely upsetting for all of us,” Ocasio-Cortez said.

“It’s upsetting for all of us who are invested in a Democratic majority so that we can develop health care, so that we can increase wages, so that we can protect workers,” she continued.

Democrats have not lost their majority and still control the House. They did, however, lose a net of seven seats to the GOP – including Max Rose’s seat on Staten Island – which sparked a string of feverish points as to who is to blame.

Ocasio-Cortez, 31, who is the face of the party’s progressive flank, has addressed some of the sharpest criticisms of his centrist colleagues since the Nov. 3 election and told town hall that the party needs to improve .

“[T]The point is, if we don’t get better, we’re not going to get better, ”she said, pushing back against stereotypes that progressives were granola-eating hippies.

“I think we can be a lot better at our messages, our mechanisms, and who we invest in, and really looking at how we even run these campaigns,” she said.

His office did not immediately return the request for comment on Sunday.

Last week, Ocasio-Cortez targeted West Virginia Democratic Senator Joe Manchin after he said he did not support cutting police funding – even after South Carolina Representative Jim Clyburn, has accepted that the currency has foiled promising Democratic candidates.

The Democratic Party is in the throes of a civil war after last week’s presidential race, which saw Joe Biden win but the majority of Democrats in the House have eroded and their dreams of reclaiming the Senate are fading.

The progressive wing of the party, led by Ocasio-Cortez and his fellow “Squad” members, Representatives Ilhan Omar, Rashida Tlaib and Ayanna Pressley, accused the Democratic leaders of resting on their laurels and not organizing at the base level.
