Call of Duty: Black Ops – Cold War set a new record for the highest day one digital sales in franchise history. The game debuted on current-gen consoles, next-gen consoles, and the PC on Friday.
Activision Blizzard Europe / Middle East / Africa chief executive Anna Malmhake said in a statement on Sunday that the title is coming out in the largest and most engaged Call of Duty community of all time, thanks to the expansion of the franchise over the past year. (Here is our review of the game).
Call of Duty: Mobile has reached over 300 million downloads on mobile devices, and the Call of Duty: Warzone battle royale mode has been downloaded over 80 million times. Malmhake said the company will continue its practice of launching free content after launch.
Meanwhile, some players are reporting bugs. I noticed a bug in the single player campaign on PlayStation 5, in a game where two characters are standing on a platform being transported by helicopter. The platform carries a mainframe, and the two characters must repel attackers from all sides. The bug is a graphical flaw where you slide off the platform as it rocks back and forth. I have encountered this on a few difficulty modes on the PS5.
Activision also had to fix the bugs that affect the downloads of the PS5 version, as well as the one that disconnects PlayStation 4 DualShock controllers during gameplay.
I had a fairly easy time playing multiplayer matches, which is quite unusual for a big game launch, as traffic disruption is normal at launch.
Activision Blizzard did not disclose total sales for the game or the franchise. Last year, the company said Call of Duty surpassed 300 million copies sold since 2003.
