Baltimore Ravens tight end Nick Boyle suffered a late-season left knee injury in the third quarter of Sunday night’s 23-17 loss to New England, coach John Harbaugh said.
After making a 4-yard capture, Boyle took a direct hit to his left leg, causing it to bend inward. The entire Ravens team surrounded Boyle before he was sent off the field.
Boyle is considered one of the best tight blocking ends in the NFL. He entered Sunday’s game as Baltimore’s sixth wide receiver.
It was a painful night for Baltimore, who ruled out nose tackle Brandon Williams (ankle) and classified cornerback Terrell Bonds (knee) as doubtful to return.
Williams injured his left ankle early in the game and was initially viewed as questionable before being demoted.
The Ravens were already without a defensive end Calais Campbell, who was inactive due to a calf injury. That ended Campbell’s 98 straight start streak, which was the second longest in progress for defensive volleys.
Without Williams and Campbell, Baltimore allowed 173 rushing yards in the loss. The Ravens entered Sunday night with the No.8 defense, giving up 101.8 yards per game.
