Few places in the Star wars The universe holds a sweeter place in the hearts of fans than Tatooine. While this isn’t the first thing we see in the galaxy in the distance, it’s where a young farm boy named Luke Skywalker first got the call to start a revolution.
From its desert planes to the iconic canteen, Tatooine has always been a symbol of the rural galaxy. In the new season of The Mandalorian, however, fans got to see a different side of the planet.
What is Tatooine?
According to the official Star wars website, Tatooine is a “harsh desert world orbiting two suns in the outer rim of the galaxy.” (Per StarWars.com) These two suns serve as the backdrop for several iconic moments in the Star wars cannon.
However, in addition to the stunning images, the planet also serves as a world anchored in Star wars, where much of the technology, brilliance, and futurism of the franchise has yet to land.
The planet has so far appeared onscreen in six Star wars. This is where Luke Skywalker’s Guardians dropped him off so he could live a life away from the dangers that surrounded his lineage.
It was also there that he met an old hermit named Ben Kenobi whom he quickly realized was something more. It’s not only one of the first places the franchise goes, but, starting at The Rise of Skywalker, the place where history also culminates.
Not everybody Star wars is a Jedi or a warrior. Some are normal beings who have to fend for what they have. Basically, the Star wars saga is an elaborate rags to riches story about how someone doesn’t have to be rich and succeed in making a difference.
Sometimes there is something deeper that drives them to greatness.
The Tatooine of the ‘Mandalorian’

The release of Season 2 in Tatooine is not the series’ first desert desert adventure. During the first season, fans got another glimpse of the planet as the titular character brings Baby Yoda and tries to protect him. However, Tatooine’s storyline was ultimately only a small part of the season. Now Tatooine is playing a much bigger role.
The perfect setting for the series’ Western-inspired set, Tatooine has, so far, been the main focus of the second season. The series bringing perhaps a beloved but notoriously underused character back to Boba Fett, a wasteland filled with crime and people doing what they need to stay alive is the perfect setting.
While fans have praised the series for its unique take on the beloved franchise, some see the extended stay on the planet where it all started as the same type of fan service that turns them away from more recent films.
‘The Mandalorian’ fans step in
Many fans saw the return to Tatooine as a disappointing ploy to build excitement in a series that has proven that being different still works inside the galaxy far away. Reddit user u / Flock_of_Porgs started it with a simple anecdote.
“I wasn’t excited to see Tatooine. . . again.”
However, while the user had some issues, it was not a universally shared idea. U / Rudy1661 saw the return to Tatooine as a refreshing look at how other events may have indirectly affected the inhabitants of the desert planet.
“It’s certainly possible, a poor place like Tatooine works pretty much with second-hand items. But a more credible theory would be that once Anakin won the podrace, people started to copy the design and it became extremely popular on the planet.
Anyway, the creators of The Mandalorian might need to think about how they can appease fans with something new while still returning to places before. If they don’t, fans could activate them just like they did for the franchise’s past attempts at fan service.
