The competitive Smash Bros. community took action online this year, but one event wasn’t so lucky.
The Big House – the oldest major Smash tournament in the United States – has received a cease and desist order from Nintendo of America. The problem Nintendo has with this year’s event is that it requires “illegally copied versions” of Super Smash Bros. melee and would also use Slippi Online – the catering netcode for players to fight online.
In a statement to Polygon, Nintendo said the tournament organizers “refused” to cooperate, so it was left with “no choice” but to take action to protect its intellectual property and trademarks. Notably, the company says it will “continue” to support the competitive Smash Bros. scene. in the future.

We have partnered with many Super Smash Bros. tournaments in the past and have hosted our own online and offline tournaments to the game, and we plan to continue to have that support in the future.
