The Rockets are likely to attempt to re-sign veteran big man Jeff Green once the 2020 NBA free agency period opens on Friday, per longtime beat writer Jonathan figs of Houston Chronicle.
“Among their own free agents, the Rockets should be looking to bring back center / forward Jeff Green,” Feigen wrote.
Green averaged 12.2 points (56.4% FG) and 2.9 rebounds in 22.6 minutes per game with the Rockets last season. He has often played center in Mike D’Antoni’s smaller squads but if retained he could also be an option at the forefront if new coach Stephen Silas chooses to play bigger.
Since Green only played in Houston for one season, the Rockets have no bird or “Early Bird” rights to hold him back. Indeed, they will be on a financial par with other suitors, some of whom are expected to show interest in the 34-year-old.
Although Houston is above the league’s salary cap, the Rockets have various exceptions that could theoretically be used on Green (as other teams do). However, using any of these (or some) on Green could be prohibitive to the team’s chances of attracting external improvements. As such, the Rockets might hope to sign him for minimum wage.
Before Houston signed a one-year minimum contract with Green in late February, the 6-foot-8 tall man was not signed by any team for nearly two months. It remains to be seen whether Green’s performance at the end of the season (including the playoffs) turned heads enough to shift his value from unsigned for weeks to potentially receiving big offers. The answer could come once the free agency opens at 5:00 p.m. Central.
