Freshman Gamecock undergoes end-of-season surgery

Interim Head Coach of South Carolina Mike Bobo revealed redshirt freshman tight end Keveon mullins underwent surgery on a high ankle sprain he suffered against LSU on October 24. He will be out for the rest of the season.

“Keveon ended up having to have surgery on that high ankle sprain,” Bobo said on the Carolina Calls phone show Thursday night. “He’s going to be out the rest of the season. He’s out for this game. Other than that, I think we’re pretty healthy offensively. There isn’t a guy that comes to mind.”

Mullins has had three catches for 110 yards in five games played this season. Mullins in a red shirt last season after failing to appear in any game as a wide receiver. He made the move to the close game during the offseason when Bobo was hired as the team’s offensive coordinator and quarterback coach.

Through seven games in 2020 with a record of 2-5, the Gamecocks face a long list of players not playing, either through injury or withdrawal. Most of the missing bodies are on the defensive side of the ball. After the head coach Will muschamp was sacked on November 15, four players decided to retire; junior defensive backs Jaycee Horn, Israel Mukuamu and RJ Roderick and first-year defensive tackle Makius scott.

On the injury front, senior linebacker Spencer Eason-Riddle is out for the season due to a torn ACL. Senior Linebacker Sherrod greene had to undergo hip surgery after the first game of the season and has yet to return. Senior edge rushers Aaron Sterling (knee) and junior Brad johnson (undisclosed) are out for the Missouri game, as is the freshman defensive tackle Alex huntley (ankle). Bobo said junior wide receiver Jalen brooks (back spasms) is questionable for Saturday. Rear graduate Adam prentice missed Thursday’s visit due to a “sore throat”.

Bobo later revealed that the Gamecocks roster was on the verge of not having the required 53 fellows due to injuries, withdrawals and positive tests. The program had a positive player test on Thursday. Around the time Bobo starts his radio show, the Missouri head coach Eliah Drinkwitz spoke on his own and said the Tigers have that number of 53 players available. No announcement was made by either school on the status of Saturday’s game.

The Gamecocks will host Missouri at 7:30 p.m. on the SEC Network Alternate Channel on Saturday night. Mike Morgan will serve as voice per play for SEC Network Alternate with Hutson Mason for analysis. Alyssa Lang will work as an assistant journalist. The all-time series between the Gamecocks and the Tigers is tied 5-5. South Carolina holds a 3-1 lead at Williams-Brice Stadium.

It will be the penultimate home game of the season. Carolina will host Georgia next week, kicking off at 7:30 p.m. on SEC Network, and closing the regular season at Kentucky on December 5. The start of this competition has not yet been announced.
