Samsung’s voice assistant, Bixby, was a bit of a letdown. We’ve already started to see some discontinued features, and the company is even considering removing it altogether. While Bixby’s fate is not sealed again, Samsung has stopped forcing its half-baked assistant down the throats of its users. The latest example comes with its line of televisions, which now have Google Assistant support, a year after the addition of Alexa.

Bixby and Alexa are capable enough to control your TV with your voice. Where Google Assistant shines, however, is in the built-in Google services it brings. It can search your queries on Google’s robust search engine, retrieve your memories from Google Photos, etc. Meanwhile, with Alexa’s excellent support for thousands of smart devices, you can now control virtually any connected device in your home. And the fact that Samsung gives you the option to switch between voice assistants and not lock yourself into itself is laudable enough.

Currently, only Samsung’s 2020 line of 4K and 8K TVs can be used with the Google Assistant. Samsung says you don’t need to download any additional software to get the functionality, so it might flip the switch remotely. Google’s voice bot was first launched on Samsung TVs in the UK, France, Germany and Italy in October. And by the end of November, eligible users in a total of 12 countries, including Spain, Brazil, India and South Korea, will have access to the Assistant.
