Trump refused to accept defeat in the 2020 election, despite Biden’s decisive Electoral College victory and popular vote. The former vice president won nearly 80 million votes, more votes than any US presidential candidate in history by a considerable margin. Trump received nearly 74 million votes.
CNN and other media have projected that Biden won the race nearly two weeks ago, when Pennsylvania’s 20 electoral votes put Biden above the 270 needed to become president. Biden is ultimately expected to get 306 electoral votes while Trump gets 232, the same amount Trump beat Hillary Clinton in 2016.
The president refused to concede the race, making false claims about widespread electoral fraud without proof and attempting to undermine the democratic process. Judges have repeatedly dismissed minor lawsuits alleging fraud, pointing out that there was no evidence.
Americans have voted by mail in record numbers this year to protect themselves from exposure to the coronavirus amid a global pandemic. Experts had warned for months that there would be a long vote count and a result might not be known on election night or even days after.
The president and his allies are trying to cast doubt on the entire voting process and have refused to cooperate with a power transition. General Service Administrator Emily Murphy has refused to officially launch the presidential transition, barring Biden’s team from accessing millions of dollars in public funds and other resources. Biden’s team warned the delay had real consequences for national security and their response to coronaviruses.
