INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – The holiday season will come alive with lights and animals on Saturday night when Christmas at the Indianapolis Zoo returns for another year.

The zoo has had over 50 years of practice perfecting the vacation experience, but like everything else, this year will be different.

Although entry to Santa Claus Village is included in the price of regular zoo entry, reservations are required to help maintain social distancing.

“There are some parts of the village that we left out because social distancing was not possible,” said Melanie Laurendine, conservation public relations specialist at the Indianapolis Zoo.

The maze of mirrors is most conspicuously absent, but there is still much work to be done.

“We have over a million lights and the Tunnel of Lights is always a fan favorite,” Laurendine said.

While young visitors can still take a socially distant photo with Santa, they won’t be able to sit in Santa’s lap. Mrs. Claus’ cooking is still part of the experience but there will be no cookie decoration.

At the zoo, visitors can learn about animals from the zoo’s cold climate such as reindeer and penguins. Visitors can experience the penguins up close during the Penguin Encounter from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., weather permitting.

Christmas at the zoo from November 21 to December 30 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.
