Columbia University has temporarily banned 70 students who traveled to the Turks and Caicos Islands in violation of the school’s travel policy, according to a report.
“The trip to Turks and Caicos was a group event that violated this policy and therefore was disciplined,” university spokesperson Christopher Cashman told CNN.
Cashman did not say when the trip took place.
“All university or business travel, national or international, is suspended” for the fall semester, according to an online description of the school’s COVID-19 travel policy.
Cashman said banned MBA students are not allowed on campus until December 1 and must attend classes remotely.
“All of this is done to protect the broader health of our community,” he told CNN. “Fortunately, to date our rate of positive cases remains low.”
The United States saw more than 12 million confirmed cases of COVID-19 and more than 255,000 deaths on Saturday, according to John Hopkins University.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has recommended Americans not to travel during the holiday season.
But those who choose to do so should continue to follow safety protocols such as wearing masks, washing hands and meeting only at small gatherings, according to the CDC.
