The NFL has expanded its mandate for the use of masks on the sideline and threatens discipline for those who violate the league’s updated COVID-19 protocols.
The league told teams in a memo on Monday that players who do not replace or prepare to enter the field and do not wear their helmets will need to wear a mask or double-layer gaiter on the sideline, to from this week.
Calling players must now wear a mask even if they have a face shield. Post-match interactions between players and staff will be limited. Additionally, players and team staff must wear masks and can briefly greet opponents after matches.
“Players who do not wear masks on the sidelines will be subject to discipline,” the league said in its memo. “Clubs are required to apply these rules. Violations by players and / or staff will result in the imposition of liability measures on the club. It is strongly recommended that each club designate one or two people in the bench area to ensure compliance with these rules. “
The league is also reducing the maximum number of players that can travel to 62. Any player who makes it to a match, including injured people who are not eligible to play, will count against the maximum of 62 players.
Starting in week 13, all members of a team’s traveling party must wear N95 or KN95 masks on team planes and buses.
From November 30, access to a team’s training facilities will be limited to essential football and support staff during player and coach attendance times.
The league also limits to five the number of specialists such as chiropractors, massage therapists and barbers who can enter a club’s facilities each week.
