A great adventure not complete 4K on PS5, is a simple 720p based on PS4

Perhaps the most overlooked game to launch for the PlayStation 5 was Sackboy: A Big Adventure, which isn’t exactly fair, as it’s actually a very fun little platformer. But how does it hold up technically? Is this a true showcase of the capabilities of the PS5 and are the PS4 versions worth playing? Well, the tech managers at Digital Foundry put the Sackboy to the test and came to some startling conclusions. You can check out their full video below if you have around 20 minutes to spare.

The PS5 records your voice every time you unlock a trophy

Sackboy: A Big Adventure sports a cartoon art style, so you’d expect it to pull off 4K / 60fps on PS5 with no issues, but apparently it doesn’t. According to DF, Sackboy is dynamic 4K and most of the time it runs at around 75% of full 4K. That said, it’s still better than current-gen consoles – the PS4 Pro only targets 1080p and the base PS4 is only 720p.

Why the low resolution? Well, despite Sackboy’s pretty veneer, the game throws a lot of things onto the screen at once and features plenty of screen space reflections and relatively advanced lighting and shading on the PS5. On PS4, most of these effects are missing, and some level details have been removed as well. More positively, all three versions of Sackboy run at 60fps during gameplay, although the PS4 versions do experience drops during cutscenes.

Bottom line, Sackboy is a more technically demanding game than you might think, and it does look like it was originally designed as a PS5 title and later ported to the PS4. Before watching the DF video, I kind of assumed that the current version and the new generation of Sackboy would be more or less on par, but it turns out that’s not really the case. Honestly, given the low resolution and some visual tradeoffs, I would probably skip the game on a base PS4.
