How much do you think the lives of the four sassy Bollywood brides featured in this Netflix series produced by Karan Johar will depend on how you define the adjective. Looking for incredible entertainment in the form of a seamless peek into the rarely seen bowels of Mumbai’s film industry? Lower your expectations. Fabulous Lives of Bollywood Brides is anything but fabulous. It’s not even a passable whistle or, at one point, some sort of “guilty” pleasure.
Modeled after American reality TV shows like keeping up with the Kardashians and The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, Fabulous Bollywood Wife Lives will certainly find takers. But it’s not a deep dive. The eight-episode series does not provide any real insight. When he wants to be flashy, he is fragile. It’s not even windy enough to make the rally a success? He peddles lifestyles rather than lives.
The four women in the series – Bhavana Panday, Maheep Kapoor, Seema Khan and Neelam Kothari Soni – are celebrities. But they have lives beyond the glare of the media spotlight. Chunky Panday’s wife Bhavana owns a fashion line. Maheep gave up her acting aspirations in the name of marriage to Sanjay Kapur and motherhood. Seema Khan, wife of Sohail Khan, is a very active fashion designer.
Neelam, married to actor and director Samir Soni, had a flourishing career in Bollywood in the 1980s and is now a jewelry entrepreneur. If all of this had been factored into the series in a more pronounced way, the series wouldn’t have felt so light. The sparkle and glamor of being a part of Bollywood, tangentially as it is, is what the show showcases instead of shining the spotlight on the ‘social life’ of the four women as they grapple with their commitments. personal and professional.
Bhavana, Seema, Maheep and Neelam have been friends for a quarter of a century, a fact they flaunt when they taste and eat, attend parties, and go on girls’ vacations. But much of what they’re set to do on the show doesn’t seem entirely unpredictable, and is largely wasted in flippant chases and youthful unrest.

We don’t see a lot of interactions of women with their husbands or children. The focus is on them worrying about what to wear to a party, end up in a major hubbub over a minor point of dispute between two of them on one occasion, and end up in a meeting hard to explain when one of the husbands, on a night out, mentions the thorny millennial abbreviation MILF.
On one end of the spectrum, Neelam, who turned her back on her acting career many years ago, plans to return to the heart of the action. On the other hand, Maheep and Sanjay Kapoor’s 19-year-old daughter Shanaya is taking baby steps as a public figure in preparation for a career in Bollywood. After an event in Paris, where the Kapoors have a one-time whale, the young girl is brutally brought home. The mother naturally takes it badly. She asks for help from her nephew Arjun Kapoor to overcome the crisis. It is not easy to be a child star, to have thick skin, advises the actor.
When they’re not planning their next date with Karan Johar – who repeatedly surfaces and happily hijacks the show – they entrust Maheep with the responsibility of planning an itinerary for a vacation in Doha. Two of the episodes are devoted to the stay in Qatar. We wonder if this series will do for Qatar (when the pandemic ends and we can travel freely again) Zindagi na milegi dobara made for Spain.

Fabulous Lives of Bollywood Brides also plugs in the fashion brand of Bhavana Panday and Gauri Khan Designs, in addition to shedding some light on Seema Khan’s style work. Probably the most interesting male character on the show is Samir Soni, a man who frankly admits that he has no social skills and has no patience for Bollywood parties. When he agrees to accompany his wife to a do, he wants to run away early. The glamor of advertising is obviously not everyone’s cup of tea.
Along with the Bollywood Wives Club, the focus is on members of the Karan Johar coterie who, whenever they have the chance, talk about the hard work that children born into the industry have to do to keep what they want. ‘they have. inherited, implying that the accusations of nepotism leveled against entrenched Bollywood biggies are unfounded. Their response is unanimous and Neelam says she would forfeit her pay if she was chosen to face the actor in his comeback movie. the Fabulous Lives of Bollywood Brides offers no meaningful insight (not a failure but an obviously deliberate choice) into the lives of stars and their families in a demanding and ruthless film industry where those with the right last names are like cats. They have nine lives.
Maybe more. And that’s the phenomenon the series doesn’t hesitate to celebrate. Love it or group it.
